Talk on grammaticalization pathways from clefts in Cushitic by Håvard Weiberg-Johansen and colleagues at "New Approaches to Egyptian Grammar"
At the conference New Approaches to Egyptian Grammar: Findings and Prospects of the LCDE Project, Håvard Weiberg-Johansen co-presented along with Maarten Mous and Christian Rapold a talk on diachronic pathways from cleft constructions in Cushitic. As East African comparative background for the analysis of grammaticalization in Egyptian, they laid out several different and only partially related instances of grammaticalization from cleft constructions in Cushitic, arguing that the use of clefts to build new grammar is a recurrent trend in the family, and sketching out some case studies for how this seems to have happened.
