The role of (working) memory for language

What is the role of memory, and in particular working memory, in learning a language, and in speaking and understanding it? I will address these questions from the perspective of the cognitive psychology of language. In the first part, I will give an overview of recent research on human working memory, with a focus on the mechanisms of maintenance that I think might be important for language processing. In the second part, I will present research that speaks to the roles of working memory and long-term memory for children’s learning of their first language.
