The periphery at the core of language evolution

This talk builds on some fascinating work from ISLE members that seeks to uncover deeper roots for some of the most distinctive aspects of human language, such as complex syntax or semantics. Encouraged by results from, e.g., Townsend et al. 2018 (PLoS Biology), Watson et al 2020 (Sci.Adv), Zuberbühler 2019 (PhilTransB) I will be asking questions about the evolution of ‘language combinatorics’. My focus will be on the putative brain circuits that make this possible: together with Hagoort 2018 (Curr Op Beh Sci), I think that language evolution research must take a stance on the mapping between mind and brain. I will argue that for (complex) syntax in particular, properties often relegated to the “periphery” are actually at the core of what we do with words. My overall argument will go against claims that the core of language can be dissociated from communication, and can be seen as a contribution to attempts to eliminate harmful dichotomies that have long dominated, but hindered progress in, the language sciences.
