What do the deep histories of languages reveal about the human past, and about the diversity of human thought? These questions drive my research on language evolution, which I explore using Bayesian phylogenetic methods and computational modelling. Much of my work focuses on the Indigenous languages of Sahul (Australia and New Guinea), one of the world's great reservoirs of linguistic diversity, but it also extends to comparisons across the world's languages. On Prof. John Mansfield's project "Conceptual Diversity and the Evolution of Abstract Thought" (CONCEVO), I am investigating how culturally salient concepts have moved and changed across Sahul over time.
